Build a community they say. It’ll be easy, they say. Then you host an event an NO ONE shows up and you have to drink all the beer (ok, well, that’s not necessarily the worst thing!). Running events and building communities can be fraught. #DevRel is not for the meek. It’s a tough, hard slog to build a community, but there are riches along the way.
And those riches are the people you meet and the relationships you build. Veterans nod knowingly at one another!
In this week’s podcast, Vicky Twomey-Lee and I revisit some of our own early days memories. Her interview provides a wonderful insight into the work and rewards associated with building any community, but particularly in our case, developer communities.

As a companion piece, why not read this DevRelX article about why all this developer community stuff matters in the first place, and what developers expect to gain from participating. Armed with Vicky’s know-how and this article’s data, you are on your way to a great DevRel events strategy for the future - but be patient. You have groundwork to do….and surplus pizza to eat.
