How did Elon Musk fit so much in to the last month? He sure is hardcore! In the midst of his widely publicized and reported changes at, and utterances on Twitter, he also managed to throw shade on Microservices as a method of systems architecture.
To paraphrase Derek Faye, a character from comedian Catherine Tate, how very dare he!
I wrote The Tao of Microservices, (its second edition is available from Manning publications) to explain and guide an organisation’s deployment of a microservices architecture. It’s an accessible but book length book….obviously. So this week I was happy to see more succinct but equally accessible pieces on microservices.
Through the Dev.to newsletter we discovered this nice piece from Pavan Belagatti, Developer Advocate with Harness. I particularly liked his almost checklist like layout of pros!
And of course, doing his usual above and beyond is Asim Aslam, a recent guest (Episode 70) on our Fireside with Voxgig podcast. Asim’s LinkedIn article is clear eyed; yes there are tradeoffs with microservices, but there are undeniable benefits too.
From Asim’s article:
We see a natural path towards the adoption of microservices within organisations. At a certain scale it becomes more difficult to manage monolithic systems and the tradeoffs in decentralising both people and technology are worth making for the benefits they provide.
