We knew back at the start of 2023 that it was going to be a tumultuous year for DevRels, and our podcast guests knew it too. While the sentiment has proven to be correct, over the last few months we’ve interviewed some of the most intelligent and savvy people in DevRel and they’ve brought us their wisdom and advice for weathering the storm. Two of these people are Kelly M and Wesley Faulkner, who bring us not only their analyses of the situation (as well as their personal stories in DevRel), but also real, practicable advice on how you can ensure your own security.
The DevRel Business Hat
You might remember that Kelly M gave an excellent talk at our last Dublin DevRel Meetup. Well, we knew we had a lot more questions for her, so she joins us on the podcast for an even deeper dive. Kelly believes that an unconventional background may be more of a benefit in DevRel than you might think. But when you’ve landed that DevRel role, how exactly do you go about keeping it? It’s not a job you can recline into and put your feet up - that’s why people are attracted to it! Kelly tells us that we hold more power than we know, and just because you don’t have a metrics team to track your progress, doesn’t mean you can’t do it yourself.
The “Trimming The Fat” problem
Wesley Faulkner is something of a philosopher, and he brings this energy to his episode of the Voxgig podcast. Wesley breaks down the idea of “trimming the fat”, and why DevRel appears as a perfect candidate for this practice to CFOs. Well we all know the problem - what’s the solution? Wesley believes that DevRel has a bit of a PR problem. It’s more of a weekly column than a full page spread, and that needs to change if we want to stay in the magazines at all.
A Special Career Tips Meetup - Wednesday 22nd November
We have a meetup dedicated to help with some of the recruitment and job security issues in DevRel. Join us on Wednesday November 22nd for a very special event.
This time, the session will be a little different. We will start with a super presentation from Erin Mikail Staples, a pro not to be missed. Then we will have a panel discussion with Erin, me, Sinead our COO and a special guest Pachi Parra. This discussion will be open to all members of the audience through the Vi.to platform that has a pretty awesome comments/reply/star which allows for rapid and conversational audience chatter!
