Why should you have a DevRel team or even bother with tech events? Listen up!
Fireside with Voxgig podcasts provide the answers you need.
I’ve covered the tech layoffs in a previous newsletter with some insights from Caelen King about hiring software developers. As the tech industry continues to appear like it’s tightening the belt, perhaps your organisation needs a reminder of the value developer relations brings. A huge part of DevRel is the creation and organisation of events; another budget that might need slightly more explanation these days.
So here are two podcast episodes you need.
Martin Woodward gives Microsoft’s and GitHub’s perspective on DevRel. It’s pretty obvious that if these large and successful companies see the value in developer advocacy, then it’s probably worthwhile! Activities like supporting and being available to developer customers, supporting Open Source, creating and building a culture of being a bit better every day in your technical teams; these add value to your organisation.
Martin, and indeed other guests during February had mentioned the importance of events and speaking in the role of developer advocate especially, but DevRel in general. Due to the hiatus in live events, there are many in this DevRel space without the experience of organising or running or speaking at a large tech event with thousands of in-person attendees. And so I reshare the Fireside with Voxgig podcast episode with Courtney Stanley.
Courtney is experienced in tech and events, and speaks clearly about the need for event emcees; ESPECIALLY for online events! This is a great episode to quickly get your head back in to why it’s worthwhile to create or participate in an event. And for this hybrid era, Courtney offers interesting and sensible insights for ensuring success. Underpinning everything though is her advice: have a strategic objective for your event or meeting. And collect data to find out if it was achieved.
These episodes (and many others in the Fireside with Voxgig archive ) will help you and your team explain and deliver the value that successful and strategic DevRel can enable.
Speaking of events, next week’s newsletter will be dedicated to the recent Dublin DevRel Meetup and with news of the next one.
